History
The console was conceived in the year 2001, as the Nintendo Game Cube was first released. According to Nintendo's game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, in an interview, the concept involved was focusing on a new ways of player interactivity. They have agreed that the processing power is not everything for a game console. There just can't be too many powerful game console at a time. It's like having only ferocious prehistoric dinosaurs. The competition will be fierce and that would hasten their own extinction."
Two years gone by, designers and engineers were assembled together to further develop the new game console concept. In the year 2005, the controller interface had taken form, but a public exhibition at that year's expo was not made. Miyamoto explained that they still have to do some troubleshooting. So, they decided not to reveal the controller and instead only displayed the game console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata later presented and demonstrated the Wii Remote at the September Tokyo Game Show.
The Nintendo DS is said to have influenced the Wii design. Designer Ken'ichiro Ashida noted, we had the DS as a reference while working on the Wii. We thought about cloning the DS's touch-screen panel interface and even came up with a prototype. The idea was eventually discarded. Miyamoto also expressed that, if the DS had not succeeded, we might have taken the Wii back to the drawing board.
Name
The console was known earlier by the code name of "Revolution" until April 27, 2006, immediately prior to E3. Nintendo Style Guide put it that the name is simply Wii and not Nintendo Wii. This means that it is the first home console Nintendo is selling outside of Japan without the company trademark name. While "Wiis" is a commonly used pluralization of the console, Nintendo has reiterated that the official plural form is "Wii game systems" or "Wii game consoles." Nintendo spells "Wii" with two lower case letter "i" meant to represent players gathering together, likewise representing two people standing side by side, as well as to represent the game console's non-conventional controllers. "Live with it, Sleep with it, Eat with it, Move along with it" has become the Wii's mantra.
